CHAPTER 26: ISSAC

Chapter 26 conveys God renewing his promises to Isaac, who acts as a transition-character figure between Abraham and Jacob. God reiterates the promises that He had made to Abraham. Isaac stayed at Gerar. It is interesting to consider his motivation Did he obey because of the promises made to him by God because of his father or did he integrate God’s promises and make them his own?  The development of faith is similar as initially we believe because we are taught by our parents. but later, our intimacy with God must be our own.

It is also worth pondering on the experience of Isaac as the ‘lamb of sacrifice’ that Abraham intended to obey God. What affect did this experience with his father have on his relationship with God?
Later in the chapter, Isaac is sent away and has to set up his home elsewhere. When he is finally settled, his adversaries come, recognising as vs 28 states ’the Lord is plainly with you...and you are now the blessed of the Lord’.

One important aspect here is to note that Isaac realised that his adversaries had hated him, causing him to move, but later he dialogues with them despite his initial apprehension of their hate. They in their turn were able to recognise his goodness and that he was blessed by the Lord.

So, what about us?  Do others recognise that the Lord is with us?
How do we respond to those who hate us?

Isaac at first glance may be a transition figure, but perhaps Isaac offers us food for thought for our behaviour.
May others recognize Christ in you.
