Compendium Series: Knowing God by human reason

COMPENDIUM SERIES

Christ the Teacher: Compendium Series Icon.

People often believe that they can know God through the light of reason only rather than coming to Him through faith. The Compendium of the Catholic Church poses this question and it is interesting to see what it states.

3. How is it possible to know God with only the light of human reason? (CCC 31-36,46-47).

Compendium states:

Starting from creation that is from the world, and from the human person, through reason alone one can know God with certainty as the origin and end of the universe, as the highest good and as infinite truth and beauty.

What does this mean for me?

  1. I can praise God for being God the creator, as being highest good and as infinite truth and beauty.
  2. I can aim for a higher level of truth and beauty in myself, appreciate creation more and aim for the highest good in all circumstances.
  3. I am able to reflect and repent where these 3 aspects are not present or are lukewarm.

Questions to consider:

  1. What do these 3 reasons mean?
  2. How I can expound them in a way that would be user friendly to a non-believer?
  3. What resources might be helpful in exploring this?
