 Chapter 31 Laban's sons

Laban’s sons were jealous of Jacob and felt that their inheritance was being compromised.  Jacob listens to the word of the Lord and he takes to flight with his wives, his children and all his possessions and returns to the land of Cannan.  Rachel has concerns also for her inheritance for herself and her sons, and she felt keenly the loss of regard from her father. She steals the property which she believes belongs to her.

Jacob too outwitted Laban, since he had been unfairly treated for many years and decided on a payback strategy as a means of justice. It is interesting to note that Laban felt cheated and confronted him, despite him using deceptive tactics himself. Then there is a lively family discussion, with a final resolution of Laban being able to say goodbye to his daughters and grandchildren, and Jacob and his family being able to follow the word of the Lord that Jacob had received in his dream.

Chapter 31 highlights the following reflective questions for our lives.

·                     How do we respond with siblings when property and money are involved?
·                     What is our reaction when we treat someone unjustly or when someone cheats
           us?
·                     Do we listen to the word of God (like Jacob) in our lives and do what is asked?
·                     What is our capacity to deal with conflict with family and work colleagues?
·                     Do we seek a resolution that is amicable for both parties?

The old age problems of jealousy over property and conflicts in the family are evident. However, it is the ability to deal with them in a mature manner that makes or breaks for a positive/negative resolution.
