The Miracle of Cana

The Wedding Feast of Cana is a miracle story in that Jesus turned water into wine.

St John's Gospel account indicated that

'there were 6 stone water jars standing there, each holding 20-30 gallons.'

As we reflect on this miracle story, this phrase can pass over us.

However, these 6 stone water jars accounted for 120-180 gallons, or 570 litres of great new wine. This would have kept the wedding guests satisfied for several days as required by the custom, and more importantly, saved the host  of the wedding permanent disgrace.

This story has deeper meaning in John's Gospel.  The abundance of wine represents God's overflowing generosity, and the new wine of Jesus' kingdom, which symbolizes the new era that Jesus would bring.

The exchange between Jesus and Mary and the advice Mary gave to the servants is significant and is worthy of reflection.  Above all, St John's Gospel account highlights that it is the first sign of Jesus' glory, a revelation of Jesus' unique identity and power.

So how is this story relevant for us today for our spiritual growth?   The question I ask myself is:

Am I prepared to do whatever Jesus tells ME?
