The Collect for 17tj Sunday Ordinary Time reads as follows:

O God, protector of those who hope in You,

Without whom nothing has firm foundation,

Nothing is holy,

Bestow in abundance Your mercy upon us and grant that,

With You as our ruler and guide,

We may use the good things that pass in such a way

as to hold fast even now to those that ever endure.

Through Our Lord Jesus Christ Your Son,

Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God for ever and ever.

GOSPEL REFLECTION

Matthew 13:44–52

Theme: “The Treasure Worth Everything”

Setting the Scene

As Jesus continues teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven, He presents a series of short but powerful parables. Each one reveals a different aspect of God's Kingdom and invites His listeners to reflect on its true value.

Jesus compares the Kingdom to a treasure hidden in a field, a pearl of great value sought by a merchant, and a fishing net gathering fish of every kind. These images would have been familiar to the people listening to Him. Treasures were often hidden for safekeeping, merchants travelled in search of valuable goods, and fishing was an important part of daily life around the Sea of Galilee.

Through these simple stories, Jesus teaches that God's Kingdom is the greatest treasure a person can possess. It is worth seeking, worth sacrificing for, and worth embracing with one's whole heart.

Gospel Reflection: Discovering What Truly Matters

The first two parables focus on the immense value of the Kingdom of Heaven.

In the first story, a man unexpectedly discovers a treasure hidden in a field. Filled with joy, he sells everything he owns in order to purchase the field and gain the treasure. In the second story, a merchant searching for fine pearls finds one pearl of extraordinary value and again sells everything to obtain it.

Both stories reveal that encountering God's Kingdom changes everything.

For some people, faith may begin unexpectedly, like the man who stumbles upon the treasure. For others, it may involve a long search, like the merchant seeking fine pearls. Yet both discover something so valuable that every other possession becomes secondary.

Jesus is not teaching that God's Kingdom can be purchased. Rather, He is illustrating its incomparable worth. Nothing else can offer the meaning, purpose, hope, and eternal life that God offers through His Kingdom.

The final parable of the fishing net reminds us that God's invitation is extended to all people. Just as the net gathers fish of every kind, God's Kingdom welcomes people from every background and circumstance. Yet Jesus also reminds His listeners that there will ultimately be a time of accountability and judgment when God's justice will be fully revealed.

The Gospel concludes with Jesus asking His disciples whether they understand these teachings. He then describes a disciple as someone who brings forth treasures both old and new. Faith involves receiving the wisdom of God's revelation while continually discovering new depths within it.

Personal Reflection

Most people spend their lives searching for something—security, happiness, success, purpose, acceptance, or peace. While these desires are natural, Jesus invites us to consider what we value most deeply.

What is the treasure of my life?

The two men in these parables recognised something so precious that they were willing to reorder their priorities around it. Their response was immediate and joyful because they understood the value of what they had found.

As disciples, we are invited to recognise the treasure we already possess in our relationship with Christ. The more we come to know Him, the more we realise that nothing compares with His love, His mercy, and His promise of eternal life.

This Gospel also encourages us to remain open to discovering new treasures within our faith. God's Word continues to reveal fresh insights, deeper understanding, and renewed invitations throughout our lives.

4. Are there priorities or attachments that sometimes distract me from what truly matters?

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus,

You are the greatest treasure of my life.

Help me to recognise the immense gift
of knowing and following You.

Teach me to seek first Your Kingdom
and to place my trust in what truly lasts.

Give me the wisdom to recognise Your presence,
the courage to follow where You lead,
and the joy that comes from living as Your disciple.

May I continually discover new treasures
within Your Word and Your love.

Help me to share those treasures with others
through the witness of my life.
