Pondering The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit

As we are near to celebrating Pentecost this coming weekend, it is timely to consider 2 questions.

1.       Who is the Holy Spirit?

2.       What does the Holy Spirit do?

These are big questions to ponder and we should continue to  bring them to prayer right throughout the year.  However, let us now consider the essence of these questions now.

Who is the Holy Spirit:

There are 7 ways the Bible introduces the Person of the Holy Spirit.

1.       Holy Spirit as Power as shown in Acts 1:9

2.       Holy Spirit as Purifier as shown in Ez 36:25-27

3.       Holy Spirit as Liberator as shown in 2 Cor 3:17-18

4.       Holy Spirit as Wisdom as shown in Jn 14:26

5.       Holy Spirit as Judge as shown in Jn 16:7-8.

6.       Holy Spirit as Strength   as shown in 1 John 4:4

7.       Holy Spirit as New Life as shown in Ez 37

Each of these ways gives us insight and understanding as to the Person of the Holy Spirit.

We need to ask the Holy Spirit to give us Himself in these ways in our lives.  From these 7 ways, is there 1 or more ways that resonate with you now or is there a special way you need the Holy Spirit to act in your life right now?

What does the Holy Spirit do?

These key ways are helpful for us to contemplate.  use the Scripture as a starting point to consider these aspects of what the Holy Spirit.  The all important question though is What does the Holy Spirit do for you?   What can the Holy Spirit do for you?

1.       Fills us with God’s love.  Romans 5:5
2.       Defends us from lies  Jn 14: 24-26
3.       Prays through us. Romans 8 26-27.
4.       Creates Unity Eph 4:4-6
5.       Makes Scripture come alive   1 Cor2:12
6.       Helps us know we are God’s beloved children Romans 8 14-17
7.       Equips us with spiritual gifts 1 Cor 12 4-7

Do you have a relationship with the Holy Spirit?

As we lead up to Pentecost, let us consider our relationship with the Holy Spirit and ask Him boldly to work powerfully in these ways not only for yourself but also  for the whole community.
